Phyllis Teresa Barnes was born in a little house on Martin Street in Elizabeth City, NC to Miriam Harvey - Hoggard and William Barnes. Interesting Note - Her birthday on all official documents is 3/12/47. That is because she was born at home and it was not officially recorded until the next day.
Graduated from P.W. Moore High School in Elizabeth City, NC. Note: Phyllis' life was undoubtedly shaped by growing up on Martin Street and attending P.W. Moore & ECSU. It was there where she cultivated the friendships that lasted her a life time. Those friends include: Brenda, Germain, Frank, Frog, Delvin, Mike, Saundra, Erving, Venita, Janice, Linda, and more. She was also a very active sports player with her favorites being softball and basketball. She was a founder of Elizabeth City's Sparkets Softball Team.
Graduated from Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, NC with a B.S. in Health Education.
Moved to Baltimore, MD after accepting a job at Spring Grove State Hospital. Note: She missed home very much and drove back to Elizabeth City EVERY weekend for almost two years. The drive back then took up to 8 hours each way.
Married Robert E. Williamson, and became Step -Mother to his daughter Felicia. Note: Phyllis was a no fuss kind of woman and wanted the same in her wedding. She was married at the top of the stairs at a friends house in front of a hand full of guests. A quick and simple reception followed.
Graduated from Coppin State College with a Masters of Education.
Welcomed her only child, Crystal, into the world. Note: Phyllis would spend the next 28 years being the best mother that a child could ever know.
After 36 years of service to the State of Maryland, Phyllis decided to retire and set a date of May 1, 2009.
Phyllis passed away suddenly that evening. She had spent the evening with her friends at work laughing and having fun. She left and decided to stop and get a pizza, however, God decided that her work on earth was done and so he called her home.
A funeral service was held at Wylie Funeral Home in Baltimore, MD. Her viewing and funeral were attending by over 400 guests.
A funeral service was held in Elizabeth City, NC at Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church. Phyllis was burried in her home town at New Oak Grove Cemetary. Note: So many people loved Phyllis that two services in two states had to be held to accommodate them all.

"A sad day for me! Though I lost you 6 years ago, you are always in my heart! I still think "Wonder what Phyllis would say?""

"It seems so unreal to think that you have been gone for 6 years. There is not a day that goes by that I don't miss you. I can't believe that you are not here with me. I wish you could be here to see Layla. I love you."
