Memorial
Margaret L Johnson was born into this world on June 3, 1920 and after 93 years was born into eternal life on March 3, 2014. Her passing took place quietly at her home in La Mesa surrounded by her husband Dick and her children. She is survived by two sons, Mike and Vince and two daughters, Barb and Sue as well as 9 grandchildren (Erik, Jenni, Jacqui, Isaac, Nate, Dann, Joe, Laurie, and Betsy). In addition, she had 8 great grandchildren that always made her smile (Brooke, Taylor, Hailey, Leah, Shelley, John, Arden and Colton). She was and is adored by all.
Right after marrying Dick in 1948, they left Minnesota for San Diego. As an RN, she cared for many people from pediatrics to geriatrics. She particularly loved children and was passionate about protecting the unborn from abortion. As an active Roman Catholic at St. Martin’s in La Mesa, she said many prayers in her lifetime and now resides in heaven.
Having grown up of humble means, she retained her humility throughout her life. She left a very light footprint on the planet using minimal resources long before ecology was popular. Her Mid-Western independence was quite evident in her never asking for help right to the very end of her journey. Always aware of political controversy, she had a number of editorials printed in the San Diego Union. She never wasted time.
She loved animals, her faith, all children, but what she treasured most was her family. She will be missed.

Out of Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud, just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says: “There! She’s gone”.

Gone where? Gone from my sight – that’s all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of her destination.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There! She’s gone,” there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “ There she comes!”

And that is dying.

She also had written down this prayer by John Henry Cardinal Newman and kept it by her bed:

God created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me that He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told in the next. Therefore I will trust Him. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him. In perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He may prolong my life. He may shorten it. He knows what He is about.
