Mark Eric Schneider passed away in his Ojai home during the early morning of May 18, 2010. He was most often called Marcos and had bravely fought a lengthy battle with cancer. He was a devoted father to his son, Hans.

Mark was born January 9, 1953 in Tampa, Florida. He lived most of his life in California. Mark loved the ocean and friends helped him sail the beloved family sailboat the Sunday before he joined his Father. Surfing was one of his greatest passions.

He was a member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists. He was known for his environmental efforts and was recently honored Arbor Day as one of Ojai's most respected Arborists. A tree was dedicated by the City of Ojai in his honor in Libbey Park.

Mark was coach of the Nordhoff High School Sailing Club during his son's sophomore and junior years of high school. He inspired the lives of all the young men and women who sailed under his coaching.

He is survived by his son, Hans Curren Schneider, his brothers, Christian and Tim Schneider, and his partner, Gloria Morgan. He will also be remembered by the countless friends whose lives he touched forever.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 28 at 11:00 at Ojai Valley Community Church.

"Thanks for the good times and wonderful friendship. I have such fond memories of the 1st time we paddled up to the Mussel Shoals pier together and surfed it in the late 60's. That incredible Mexico surf trip also in the late 60's scoring "epic" Matichan Bay seeing 3 waterspouts all at once leading in a hurricane at Mazatland-Wow! Those 70's soul days at the pier doing yoga and just flat out surfing. See you in the next line up. Your friend forever-RB"

"I knew Marcos in the early 70's, during his college years in SLO and had the opportunity to see him a few times when Hans was a little boy. Marcos gave me a small little plant when my husband and I moved to Moorpark with our daughters, the name of that pencil looking plant long forgotten. My Marcos plant today is quite large, the story of how I got it has been told many times through the years. Marcos will be remembered through that plant for a lifetime. I see from comments that Marcos did not change much over the years, a tribute to him because he was a great guy way back then too. Sorry to hear of his passing, he left a mark in the history of my life. "

"I remember Marcos as a great lover of trees, he really truly cared about them, especially the oaks. His sense of justice prompted him into action on so many occasions they are uncountable. And his sense of humor was of the ‘split your gut’ variety. I cannot help but feel that Marcos is scouting out new terrain, he was a great person to hike with.

"Marcos, we will all miss you so much. We benefitted from everything from your sense of humor to your music and from the work you did on the trees for the festivals. You were certainly one of the most capable men I knew and could, if the need arose, handle anything from making charcoal to field dressing an unfortunate deer after a car accident. I wish we could somehow have one more performance from Bad Buzz and the Didgeri-Dudes! Rest easy friend. Michele and I will miss you and send our sincere condolences out to Hans and Gloria. "

"Marcos, you will be missed by so many. I will never forget you, tho it's been many years since I've seen you.... Whenever I think of Marcos, what comes to mind is his gentleness and warmth, how he always made me feel welcomed and loved as a friend, largely during a time when I needed that most. He held and lived strong convictions and influenced others by example to do the right thing and to love others and the planet. He often made me laugh with his antics and with the pure joy he brought with him. Even if he wasn't smiling, his integrity and active acceptance of others automatically caused a feeling of calmness and joy."

I meet mark in the 60s .I bought my first surfboard from him, and he taught me how to surf. He was a naturist. He always had good attitude on life. I looked up to him. and what an activist!
One thing I remember most. He put sand in the all the tractors gas tanks at Stanley’s before they took Stanley’s surf break away. He was so mad. I can go on and on and on
I could write a book about mark, the places we surfed, the barrels he got .The parties we went to and the trouble we got in to.

Hey Mr. Marcos,
I know would you love this - Howard and I are bringing oak seedlings to the memorial for any and all to take home and plant, both Quercus agrifolia and Quercus lobata and as Howard so eloquently put it, 'Everyone and can take a piece of Marcos home!'

"Met Marcos during the '80-'81 Diablo Bockade times. Our spirits were totally compatible, and fun to be around, even with the seroius nature of our mission. As backcountry guides, we shared some great times, dodging heli's, dogs, poison oak, etc."
