Lancelot Edgerton Drummond

(Lance) was born September 16th 1924, in New York City to Edgerton and Iris Drummond and departed this life on December 12th, 2010. His early education was obtained in New York City public schools and attended St. Paul and St. Augustine Academies in North Carolina, from which he graduated. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 in the pacific Theater of Operations. Upon his return home he attended and graduated from New York University with a degree in Business Administration. Lance was a born salesman with a rapier like a sense of humor, able to speak extemporaneously on most any subject with little or no notice.
He held several salesmen’s jobs and one job with the Department of Corrections until he began a successful career with Joseph E. Seagram’s Distillers, during which time he rose to Vice President of one of the subsidiary companies. In 1968 Seagram’s decided to launch its first black owned wholesale distributorship, and Lance convinced them that he was the man for that task. Thus, Drummond Distributors was born in Compton, California. Lance was the President and guiding light of the company until he became Chairman of the Board in 1978. The business was sold in 1980, having been in Black Enterprise’s top 100 list of companies for the most of the years of its existence.
Lance headed up a local economic development company in Lynwood, California for a few years after Drummond Distributors was sold until he finally retired to View Park, California; Martha’s Vineyards, Massachusetts , where his family still has a home in Martha’s Vineyard Haven, and Sarasota, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Diana, and is survived by his loving daughter Holly Todd, her husband Andre Todd, grandchildren Monica and Miles Todd and his sister Rita Marshall, her husband and three children. He also has cousins in Florida, New York, Georgia, Washington D.C., Maryland, California, and the Common Wealth of Jamaica.

To Holly: I am so sorry to hear your father passed away! I have a place in New York City now. I was performing at an Uptown garden party, and after discussing my California background, one of the guests mentioned he knew your father. I was shocked to hear he was gone, and so sad for you, because I know how close you were to him. It was such a coincidence to be in another state, and hear about the passing of someone I've known since I was six years old. I miss your mother Diana greatly, as well! She was seriously wonderful! Her laugh, smile, presence, looks, and style were unsurpassed! And, her biscuits and iced tea were delicious! I think of her often because she was always so uplifting and cheerful. Now they are together. I pray and chant for them both, as well as you and your family. I wish you well Holly. Take good care and I know that the space of your life where your parents filled, will continue to be a comfort and happiness for you, from now until...
Much love always,

I just today found out that Mr. Drummond passed away (5-21-14). I worked with Mr. Drummond for several years as his assistant. He was a great man and a wonderful boss. To his daughter Holly and Andre, so sorry, we lost a great man.

Lance was like a father to me. He gave me my first job when I finished college, and we had many fun times together. I gave him pool lessons. He will always be in my heart. Working for Drummond Distributing Company was an experience that has helped me throughout my life.

My dad (Ken R. Hampton) worked as an accountant for Lance at the liquor distributorship. Many weekends I'd go with him to the warehouse and offices and meet both the workers and mgment. Lance was an inspiring pressence and good friend to my father.
