Dear Maxene: I hope that you receive this message, and that if you do, that you get in touch.

I am researching my family history. In doing so, I found a marriage record from a church in Montreal showing that a Nick Agashkin, possibly a dentist from New Jersey, born around 1893, married Beatrice Spiegel in Montreal in October 1918. Beatrice Spiegel was my grandmother, who later married my grandfather (in 1923), and her earlier marriage to Nick Agashkin was not known to anyone in the current generation, although it may have been known to those alive when it took place. During my research over the years I had heard that my grandmother had "run off" with someone before she married my grandfather, but that the family had interceded and put an end to the relationship for reasons unknown, though probably because she was Jewish and he was not. So this discovery makes sense.

I am thinking that the Nicholas Agashkin who was born in 1928 -- am I correct in assuming that he was your father? -- was the son of the Nick Agashkin who married my grandmother. Would you be kind enough to contact me by email or telephone (416-922-0305) to discuss this? I am hoping that perhaps you have some pieces of the puzzle that I don't have and vice versa, and together perhaps we can uncover some interesting history of both of our families.

Best wishes, Brian Ferstman
