Memorial
We remember with love our mom, JoJo Trued, who led an amazing life and lived each day to the fullest.
-----------------------------------------------
Josephine Elizabeth Schafer Trued passed away in New York on Sunday, July 17, 2011. She was born to William and Minnie Schafer at their farmhouse in Perry, Kansas on March 16, 1924. She graduated from Perry High School in 1941, and entered the nursing program at KU. She left the program to marry 1st Lt Marine Air Corps Merlyn Trued in 1944. She supported his education through graduate school, and through his long career as an international economist which included his being appointed Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury by President Kennedy.
She loved flying and earned her small aircraft pilot license in Kansas in 1946 and spent many hours in the air with her young son.
She was charming, beautiful, and eccentric. She loved people, talking, and giving advice. At gatherings, she would invariably end up somewhere at or near the center due largely to her unique and zestful personality.
She greatly enjoyed many years traveling the world extensively with her husband, including two years spent with her family in Saigon, VietNam just before the war began. She was an accomplished artist in drawing, painting and sculpture, and also collected distinctive works of art from around the world. She became immersed in the continuing arts program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
She loved Cape May Point, New Jersey where she spent much time over a 20 year period with her many women friends living out wild and wooly times of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
She connected well and easily with other generations including her grandchildren and their friends and certainly did not hesitate to offer them “advice”.
She and her husband had two children: Micheal Trued (Alice) of Lorton, VA, and Sally Trued (Nicholas Shorter) of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. She returned for the Schafer annual family reunion in Perry whenever she could, and never lost her love of that area and its history as well as maintaining a strong sense of the importance of family.
She leaves behind many beloved relatives including seven grandchildren(Brittain Villaflores, Christy Gell, Tim Shorter, Brittain Shorter, Astrid Trued, Jaime Shorter, & Cross Trued), a special "grandaughter" Tiffany Gaerlan, brother-in-law Clif Trued and her sisters-in-law (Ruth Trued, Oleta Schafer, Gladys Schafer, Betty Atwell, Thelda Schafer), grandson-in-law Dallas Stapleton, cousins, and many nieces and nephews.
She adopted the name JoJo upon learning of the impending arrival of her first grandchild because she did not want to be known as an “old Grandma”.
As her nephew remarked: “She lived a phenomenal life and lived it to the fullest. She showed how far a young farmgirl from rural northeast Kansas could go.”
