September 10, 2013

John Powell Holland, most recently of Durango, Colorado, departed this earth for his heavenly tee time on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, in the early hours of the morning.

John “Jack” Holland was born on January 31, 1931, in New York, to Alfred Alphonse Holland and Josephine Elizabeth Ann Powell. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in Denver, Colorado. He attended St. Mary’s Academy, and graduated from East High School. He spent his youth enjoying the mountains, fly fishing, and skiing.

In 1954, he married his wife of fifty plus years, Beverly Sweet Holland. While in college he competed on the ski team. After he graduated with honors from the Colorado School of Mines in 1954 with a masters degree in petroleum engineering, he served in the Army. He and Bev moved to south Texas in 1954.

He worked for several oil & gas companies, and eventually started a business of his own, Bruin Corporation, in Houston Texas. He traveled for business to many places all over the world, including Nigeria, China, South America, and Australia.

Over the years, he took his family on many trips to Colorado where he shared with them his love for skiing, fishing and camping. In Texas, he spent much of his free time sailing and playing golf. Several of his children ended up residing in Colorado, where he eventually relocated in 2008.

After retiring, he dedicated many hours to SCORE, an organization of retired executives that provides consultation to new business owners.

He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife Beverly, and is survived by his four children, Michelle, John, Scott, Elizabeth, and their families.

I am so thankful for the time I had with my father, fly fishing and camping in the Colorado mountains, sailing on Galveston Bay, working on stuff in the garage.....will miss him forever, he instilled in me a love of adventure, a can-do spirit, and a respect for others that will always be a part of me.

John and I shared many adventures on horseback riding the San Juan Wilderness. We once rode about 80 miles from Wolf Creek Pass to Stoney Pass in a week over the Continental Divide Trail. He was a wonderful guy to share the trail with; always first up in the morning with a fire going and hot coffee ready for the rest of us just rolling out of our sleeping bags. Every time I drive past the home in Denver he grew up in I recall him telling me of hanging from a bosan chair and painting the white columns when he was a young man. John was an inspiration to me; straight from the shoulder and never minced words or actions; always doing the "right thing". Thank you John for many, many years of companionship with you. When I pass through those trails we shared, your memory will fill my heart and a tear roll down my cheek for a wonderful man and American through and through. George Straw

Dear family and friends of John Holland,

I've been thinking over the past few weeks about John and our friendship and professional relationship in the 1970s and early 1980s when I represented Wanda Petroleum and Bruin in dealing with the Federal government’s price and supply controls on oil and natural gas liquids. John, Jim Meyer, Archie Kimmey, Ernie Allen, JD Woodward and I had many interesting times and fun together. If anyone could provide me with the email or other contact information for these folks I would appreciate it or at least pass this message onto them.

John gave me a real education about the industry in the business and I hope I kept them cool and dealing with the government bureaucracy. I would say that John was ahead of his time in his dislike of federal government regulation. When those programs ended, John announced that he would never, ever be coming to Washington again.
With Condolences,

"It is unfortunate that he left us so suddenly, not many people had a chance to even say goodbye. I will forever miss his gruff spirit, his conservative views, and his kind, loving passion for family."
