Dear Laurie, Carrie and families,

WOW! Although strokes can end in a person's passing, you always have that hope for a better end result. I knew that John's chances weren't good, but there are still those rare happenings... I am just sorry that he ever had any of those strokes in the first place.

I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot express the words to adequately state how much I feel for you all. As the saying goes-"to know John was to love him", knowing that you all were close. In the past year I haven't heard whether John had typical ups and downs with his progress, but this isn't important anymore. I hope that you all had at least some time to share your goodbyes with him. I grew closer to my father during the last year of his life (he passed 7 years ago) due to my illness, not his. He gave me rides to Olympia for tests until they found out what was wrong (blocked gall bladder-required 2 operations). I fortunately asked him those questions that often never get asked. When his time came, he discovered that he had lung cancer around the 1st of December ('01) and passed at the end of January
('02) so time with him was incredibly short. Mom passed over 20 years ago within 24 hours of contacting a poison (it is in the waters of Hood Canal, though they do not talk about it).

Even though I didn't know John all my life, I almost feel that I
have. As you are aware, we spoke often about all sorts of things.
This included where he grew up, the trips he/you all took, what was going on around Texas, stuff around Seattle from when he was stationed up here to current things, how proud he is (and always will be) about his two girls. I could keep going on, but I'm sure that you get the
drift. I do know that every time I see a train, John comes to mind.
I also loved the way that he would say simple things such as Neked when he referred to, well you know. These must be Johnisms. How special!

Oh, I know that you are going to find this hard to believe, but we kind of also spoke about politics. Of course we would go round and round, though I somehow got the impression that I was on the wrong side of the debates. He may have known it, but sometimes I would play devil's advocate just to see where he would go with a topic. Of course we would often dig out heels when the talks revolved around politics, if you can believe that this is possible!

I wanted to write this sooner, but after finding out the news it was hard to put coherent thoughts onto the paper. Knowing how hard it was after my father's passing, I thought it best to also give you a little time after the service.

If it hadn't been for Carrie I would never have met your dad. Boy,
for introducing me to a good friend such as John she sure did well.
Now if you have any women that could be my future wife in mind...
That one-cup of Starbucks, when the Kingdome was imploded, was al that it took. That was close to the last time I have been to Starbucks (bitter bean). I guess that I am spoiled with all of the small roasters here in the Northwest.

I would love to share a cup of coffee with either of you, if you should ever get up this way. And of course, if I am ever in Houston and you would like to share the same, it sure would be good to share memories about your dad. Good dad's only come once in a great numbers, but great dad's like yours are very rare.

I still am at a loss for organized thoughts, but know that at least John and Wanda will be finally traveling together. If it is a train I wouldn't be surprised if it was called Heaven 1.

You all are in my prayers,

Very Sincerely,

Charlie Vammen (Friend)

I will always remember John and the TRAINS...
To the family: Remember he is in a better place and will be your guardian angel from up above...
Jesus prepares a special place for believers in heaven.

John 14:1-3
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." (NIV)
