OBITUARY

The Honourable Jeffrey Lorenzo McKitty, Custos Rotulorum for the parish of St. Mary died on April 7, 2015 in the USA after fighting a long battle with prostate cancer. He leaves behind his wife Yvonne McKitty; daughters Keshia McKitty and Dr. Nadia McKitty-Sesay; son-in-law Dr. Michael Sesay; granddaughters Zainatu Sesay and Isata Yamari Sesay; sisters Valerie Miller, Sonia Stewart and Pauline McKitty-Robinson; and brothers Billy McKitty and Rev. Brian McKitty and several nieces and nephews.

Custos McKitty was born on November 11, 1943 in Burnt Savannah, Westmoreland to father Douglas Euriah McKitty and mother Gwendolyn McKitty, who both predeceased him. He earned a Bachelors Degree from Mico Teachers College and then served as a teacher at York Castle High School in Browns Town for four years. Custos McKitty then entered the tourism industry where he served as the General Manager of several resorts including Holiday Inn in St. Louis, MO, Super Clubs Boscobel Beach, Couples Ocho Rios, Beaches Boscobel, Beaches Negril, Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort and Beaches Turks and Caicos. Custos McKitty served as a pioneer in the hotel industry in Jamaica for over 40 years. After completing his hotel career he became the Custos of the parish of St. Mary, the position he held until his passing.

Custos McKitty was a driven professional with a love for life, farming, people and most of all his country. He was a man of principle and he did everything with a spirit of excellence. He was a kind man who was always giving and always thinking of others first. Friends often said, the only thing he hasn’t given away is his heart.

When Custos McKitty was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003, he remained dedicated in his work and in his will to fight his illness. He never allowed his cancer to stop his achievements. He remained a brave iron-willed soldier even throughout his final months in life. We invite you to join us and celebrate together with the family, the life and legacy of this exemplary humanitarian who made a difference in the lives of many.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. Keith Wedderburn his Urologist in Montego Bay and the Physicians and staff of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD for their constant and attentive treatment to Custos McKitty over the last 12 years.

As the anniversary of his passing is upon us, I just want to say he has truly been missed. I will always cherish the fond memories I have from when I last saw him at his home with my wife and family the Montague's. He was truly a "Great Man". Yvonne,

I was saddened when I heard the news of Jeff’s passing,

I’ve never met anyone who had a bad word to say about him, which is a testament of his popularity, his kindness and he was humble as they come.

I had the opportunity of doing charity work in St Mary while Jeff was General Manager at Beaches Boscobel. His kindness and generosity played an important role in the success of our mission.

He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

A TIME FOR REFLECTION

The name "Jeffrey Lorenzo McKitty" will be permanently etched in the hearts and minds of the thousands of people mainly because he was a selfless human being whose body language, characterized by his glowing eyes, always conveyed the "I do care" feeling. He gave much meaning to the word, "acceptance, humility and grace" - which played a major role in the way he interacted with people from all socio-economic backgrounds. His love for people were colour blind, class neutral and had no geo-political boundaries, There were times when I wondered if the English poet, Rudyard Kipling, had someone like Jeff McKitty in his thoughts when he wrote, "If you can walk with the crowd and keep your virtue, or walk with Kings, nor lose the common touch...........yours is the earth and everything that' in it"

The "Goodbye Our Friend" service which was held in his honour on Saturday, May 02, 2015,at the St. Mary Parish Church in Port Maria, will be remembered for many, many years. The solemnity of occasion, complimented by the appropriate pomp and pageantry, were befitting of the occasion by virtue of the way Mr McKitty, aka "Mr Community Man", comported himself in everyday life. What was very unique about the dearly departed was his unassuming persona and obvious aversion to any form of profiling and self-aggrandizement. Yet, he commanded the respect and admiration of everyone who had the pleasure to interact with him, either at the social or professional level.

It is my hope that the many teachers, social workers, fathers, ministers of religion and other professionals who attended the farewell event were motivated to emulate at least one of the many characteristics that defined Mr Mckity as a gentleman of high esteem who was averse to mediocrity and had an unquenchable thirst for purity of thought and honesty. To the Minister, officers and members of the St. Mathews Anglican Church in Boscobel, be comforted by the fact that Brother McKitty was a great asset to the church in general and an excellent example for the young people who he graciously embraced and provided sagacious counselling and advice.

Finally, may God continue to bless, comfort and guide his widow, two daughters, grandchildren, and son-in-law, as they try to accept the fact that their loved one whose life was inextricably linked with theirs has said goodbye the them. May they cling to, and cherish the happy occasions he shared with them.

Blessings to everyone.

"Jeffrey has fought a good fight, he has finished his course; he has kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give him on that day: and not to him only, but unto all believers also, who love the Lord." Adieu, our beloved family friend.[II Timothy 4:7-8].
