Jaime Gomez

Medillin, Colombia
May 23, 1966

Florida, United States of America
August 28, 2011

Beloved son, beloved brother, beloved uncle, gymnastics judge and coach, jogger, surfer and dear loyal friend
This site is dedicated to Jaime Gomez.

Jaime Gomez was a beautiful person, who always had a smile, a laugh and a positive attitude for many.

He was born and raised in Medillin, Colombia, where he was an excellent gymnast. He was a student of the sport and studied Sports Science at JIC.

Jamie spent half of his life in Colombia, where he leaves behind his mother, Adela, his sister, Rosana, and his nephew, Steven and many other close relatives. He is so loved in Colombia and was known throughout South America as a wonderful colleague and a great gymnastics coach. He is missed by his family dearly and by so many coaches and friends.

He was brought to the United States by Gloria Ortiz around 1989, where he coached at her club. He coached for many years in Miami and South Florida, before moving to Orlando. He was a highly rated gymnastics judge for Men's Gymnastics and he traveled the world with the sport. Jaime also worked in gymnastics clubs in Gainesville and Ocala, Florida and he was a huge Gator fan...cheering for his long-time athlete, Ashley Reed.

Jamie Gomez received his US citizenship in 2005. An inspiration to all.

Jamie has touched so many lives with his passion and drive for the sport he loved so dearly. He served Florida as a competitive gymnastics coach and led gymnasts to a very high level, always asking them to strive for their potential. He was a great "father" figure to many, an exceptional coach and mentor to successful gymnasts like Ashley Reed, Marina Mark, Nikki Shofner, Julie Walter, Skyler Creasman and countless others, a great Godfather to Jeff and Kris Robinson's son, Dallas, and a wonderful friend to so many...priceless.

Tragically, Jaime was involved in a terrible accident on Sunday night, August 28th, 2011 at 8:45 PM. He was jogging (one of his favorite things to do) when he was struck by a car and died instantly. The driver stopped, but nothing could be done to bring our Jaime back to us. Because he only had his car key on him, his identity went unknown for several days. Close friends thought that he may have gone to Colombia to attend to his mom. A very close friend in Colombia, Sergio, was instrumental in helping to try to locate Jaime. On Tuesday, a missing person's report was filed by Rebecca at Orlando Gymnastics, with help of Jaime's former roommate Thierry, friend Ashley Reed and current roommates (Kym and her husband). The Robinson's and Russell Foster were contacted by the police, with no whereabouts of Jaime. Kris got the call Thursday from an Orlando Sergeant, that Jaime was positively identified as the jogger who was hit and killed that Sunday night. Word spread and everyone was in shock. God Bless Jaime Alberto Gomez. Rest in Peace and Love.

Friends in Florida worked hard to secure his belongings to bring back to his mother, sister, and nephew. Jaime's mother and family and friends in Colombia have suffered such a loss and the distance and unknown has been devastating.

Many memorials are set-up to honor his life.

There was a funeral service on
Thursday, September 8th, 2011
Viewing: 6pm-9pm
At 8pm there was a Catholic mass and Eulogy.
Ashley Reed's uncle, Ashley Reed, Tim Reed, Sr. and Kris Merlo Robinson spoke.

Another memorial was held at Power Tumble Gymnastics of Miami on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011, at 7 PM. 8855 NW 35 Lane, Doral, Florida, 33178 305-477-5957 Gloria Ortiz Gil, her family, her staff, gymnasts and friends celebrated Jaime's life.

Thiery, Jaime's close friend and former roommate in Gainesville, flew to Colombia on September 14th, and was able to hand deliver Jaime's personal belongings to Jaime's mom and family.

Jaime's body was flown to Colombia on August 15th, with special thanks to the Mark Family of Florida and to Ashley Reed for coordinating these efforts.

A beautiful service was held in his hometown of Medillin, Colombia, where Jaime's family and close friends mourned their loss and remember the wonderful boy and man that they loved so dearly. White rose in hand, and stuffed monkey from an Orlando gymnast nearby, Jaime's life and love and memory was honored - family, coaches, gymnasts and friends in Colombia to witness.

From Jaime's nephew (posted on facebook):

Jaime had so many pictures of friends and family and nature scenes. I've put many of his personal pictures on this memorial website to honor his love of others and his closeness to nature.

We will share and take so many beautiful memories of you Jaime - especially that smile and that laugh and your simple love and caring.
