Helmut Conrad was originally trained in the trade of being a "metal aircraft builder" including sheet metal, wiring, engines and avionics. He spent over 33 years of his professional career working in Canada at DeHavilland Aircraft of Canada Limited, which was subsequently purchased by Boeing and then Bombardier. My father worked on building "aircraft number one" of the Beaver, Otter, Caribou, Buffalo, Twin Otter, Dash 7 and Dash 8 aircraft and on the Bras D'or Hydrofoil built in Sorel, Quebec in the early 1960s. He also personally built the nose area assemblies of all of the Grumman Tracker front assemblies.

My father enjoyed designing and building model airplanes and has a passion for flying full sized aircraft, especially gliders. When I was a child my father regularly volunteered his time to teach kids how to build and fly model airplanes through many community organizations. At age 10 he started teaching me to fly and in later years he volunteered his time with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, 151 Chadburn Squadron, Oshawa where he taught the Gliding Scholarship Program and took cadets for introductory flights. After he recovered from heart surgery requiring him to get an implanted mechanical aortic valve, he established and developed training programs at Boeing to teach deaf workers the skills needed to integrate into the aircraft manufacturing work force.

My father was a very private, humble, honest and soft spoken man who was an inspiration and mentor to me and to many others throughout his lifetime. In my childhood my father taught me about small engines, electricity and electric motors, carpentry, and metalworking. My father helped me establish my research and development business in 1978, and he has been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement throughout the years. My father was involved in our research and development activities and is a co-inventor in a number of patents with me in areas such as ozone water treatment, cyclonic separation, and the use of electrostatic fields to enable and control chemical reactions.

My father has always taken great pride in his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.

We will always miss him.
