Memorial
This memorial is dedicated to Gregg Hommes. Gregg was an amazing man who loved to make people laugh with his “off-the-wall,” “Far Side” type humor! He was simply witty and funny. In light of his humorous perspective on life, Gregg was also a person with depth and wisdom. Those who know him always valued his opinion and perspectives. He also demonstrated compassion for people; if you were in need he would not hesitate to meet that need. It was that characteristic that marked Gregg as a compassionate, kind, thoughtful and generous person. Consistency is also another trait that distinguishes Gregg. You could count on Gregg to do exactly what he said and to be the same person in each situation.

Gregg was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1966. He spent his formative years growing up in Hawthorne, New Jersey with his parents, Harry and Eunice, and two older brothers, Rusty (Glenn) and Wayne.

Gregg graduated from Hackensack Christian High School in June, 1984 planning to enter Montclair State University in the fall. Over the summer Gregg was injured, postponing his college entrance for that year. Once Gregg completed rehabilitation from the spinal cord injury, he entered Montclair State University and finished his bachelor’s degree, graduating with honors, in Computer Science in just three and a half years.

Once his degree was complete, he received numerous job offers for his unique skill set. His heart’s desire was to work at Lawrence Livermore National Lab in Pleasanton, California; when that job was offered he eagerly accepted a position as a computer programmer. Gregg has served in this capacity for over 25 years.

Gregg faithfully attended Valley Community Church in Pleasanton, California. Gregg made a profession of faith in Christ as a young man. His family has the assurance that Gregg is in the presence of Christ because of his faith in Him. He will be missed here on Earth, as he left us all too soon. But we look forward to seeing him once again in heaven.

I Thessalonians 4:17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

Romans 10:9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.

From Mom and Dad:
Our beloved son, there is so much about you we miss. We remember you for your faithfulness in so many ways. Your weekly calls were very important to us. From childhood you have been dependable. If you said you would do something, you did it. You were wise; your opinions mattered to us. You would never betray a confidence and your generosity blessed many. Your quick wit and your good humor brought laughter to many. Another of your admirable qualities was truthfulness.

God lent you to us for a time; now you are in His presence. “Absent from the body and present with the Lord.” I Corinthians 5:8.

We remember a conversation we had about heaven a while back. You said you looked forward to being there for you would walk once again. Today we envision you walking and running on the streets of gold in heaven with Jesus.

We love you, precious son, and miss you. Someday we will see you again at our Savior’s feet.

The Essence of Gregg
by Donna Martin

Loving, giving, kind and warm,
but also not one to conform.
Fun loving, comical and mischievous
your “thoughts of the day” were downright infamous.

Your outrageous, crazy jokes and pranks
always drew laughter from the ranks.
For you were a character through and through,
waiting to strike without a clue.

You with your irreverent humor,
had it been someone else, it might’ve lead to rumor.
Eager to see which T-shirt you wore,
even if inappropriate, we’d laugh with a roar.

Somehow, we did not find it odd
that your email alias name was “god”.
Or, that you had a jack-o-lope named Harvey,
though others might find you kind of gnarly.

It pained most to see you eat
that raw, disgusting, bloody meat.
Nothing green would pass your lips,
but lemonade would render sips.

There's no denying your love of reading
when hour after hour found you retreating.
Be it your home filled with wall-to-wall books,
or a warm, sunny spot that snared you in it’s hooks.

How in the world could someone be cold
in 70 degree weather lo and behold!
No matter your oddities or unusual wit,
you were truly “special", we must admit.

Never unkind, judgmental or cruel.
You, our dear friend, are a treasured jewel.
No truer friend could anyone meet.
You're one in a million, gentle and sweet!

We thank you for your love and devotion.
Your life speaks volumes filling us with emotion.
Being without you is a difficult endeavor,
but we’ll love, cherish and remember you forever.

I have had so many losses of my own in the last few years. Because of divorce and other circumstances in life, I had lost touch with Gregg and had not seen him for many years. When I heard of his passing, and all that he meant to so many, I felt I had really missed out not getting to know him better. Even though we have hope in Christ, we need to pay attention and take care of our relationships here before we go. Gregg has relief from his own pain now and may all our sad hearts find relief as well. Goodbye for now Gregg.

In loving memory of Gregg, a 24K gold friend.

New Friends and Old Friends by Joseph Parry

Make new friends, but keep the old;
Those are silver, these are gold.
New-made friendships, like new wine,
Age will mellow and refine.

Friendships that have stood the test -
Time and change – are surely best;
Brow may wrinkle, hair grow gray,
Friendship never knows decay.

For ‘mid old friends, tried and true,
Once more we our youth renew.
But old friends, alas! may die,
New friends must their place supply.

Cherish friendship in your breast -
New is good, but old is best;
Make new friends, but keep the old;
Those are silver, these are gold.

Gregg was and continues to be an inspiration to so many of us. Gregg is a role model of "Facing the Giants" & defeating them!! I have so many lasting memories of Gregg, from our family vacations in Ocean Grove, NJ to just hanging out at his parents' home in Hawthorne. I always looked up to Gregg and valued his opinion on so many walks of life. I look foward to seeing you again, Gregg, in the eternal presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.

"I cannot imagine the sadness you are going through. I was looking through the HCS yearbook yesterday and saw the things Gregg was involved in. As the HCS School secretary, I knew he did well academically. Love and prayers, Don & Elaine Maitland"

"I worked with Gregg for many years. He liked to tell funny stories. We went snow skiing once and he skied all the expert runs on a sit ski. Sad to learn he has left us so soon. Wishing peace and love for his family and friends."

"Gregg and his books, oh did he love to read. Almost every day at lunch he would be sunning himself with a book for company. Other times he would join a group of us for Dim Sum. He lived life in big bites."
