OBITUARY

Madam Grace Emweruwa Umweni was born in Evboneka, Edo state of Nigeria, then Mid-Western part of Nigeria in 1939. She was born to Mr. and Mrs.Umweni Emovon of blessed memory. She was the second child, second daughter of her parents. She spent most of her childhood in Evboneka and Benin City in the care of her maternal grandmother late Aghimien Ehanire in Evboneka and maternal uncle, late Headmaster David Osagie in Benin City.

Madam Umweni’s training to become a teacher took her to Evboneka Grammar school, Women Teachers training college, Abudu, Anglican Teachers’ training, Benin city and University of Benin, all in Nigeria. She taught in many schools in Benin and Lagos, some of which are St. Finbarrs elementary, Yaba, Lagos, Baptist elementary, Fabiyi Akpata elementary, Edaiken elementary, Oluwa elementary, and Idia college, all in Benin city. She rose to the position of headmistress at Oluwa and Edaiken elementary schools before retiring from public service in 1991.

Our blessed mother was never the lazy or idle kind of person. That was why on her second visit to the United States of America in 1994, she took up a job as a caregiver. This job, she did diligently often building personal relationships with her clients, who she encouraged with the word of God, songs and prayers.

Madam Umweni retired from the Health care industry in 2010 largely so she could spend more time visiting her children and grandchildren. Madam Umweni is survived by five children- (Iyen Salami, Tinyan Imafidon, Osato Salami, Tony Odiase and Nosa Odiase), eleven grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

Madam Umweni was a deaconess in Christ Chosen Church of God, Benin City and she fellowshipped at Christ the Rock church and Abundant Life Church, New York.
She weathered the storms of life throughout her life with her firm belief in God and His unfailing love. The legacy left for her children and loved ones is her love and devotion for God and all He stands for, which we who love her strive to emulate.

EULOGY

What do we do when the bottom falls out and nothing seems 2 make sense? What do we do when the ground caves in beneath us without warning?

What is God trying to teach us from this? Was God mad @ mommy & let this happen to teach the ones she left behind a lesson? I don’t know the answers but God wasn’t mad @ Jesus when he died on the cross like a criminal 4 our sins. This brings me back to square one again. I know His ways are not ours, neither are His thoughts. So all I can do is pray to God for wisdom to understand every circumstance that befalls us.

Mommy’ a God fearing Woman who knows she is only saved by His grace. Mommy was a teacher, and she embraced her profession even in her personal relationship with all her children. She did not only teach us about school, but most importantly, she taught us about God and life.

Mommy has a relationship with God like none I’ve ever seen. Her devotion and faith in our Savior is infectious. We all get our spiritual strengths from her. She was so bold for Christ and confronted people that claimed to be demon possessed without fear. When we were younger and would visit her; Mommy had a bell that woke us up @ 6AM every morning for prayers. When we grumbled, her famous saying was “salvation is personal”. She shares the word every opportunity she has without being fanatical about it and is very accommodating of other people’ beliefs. Everywhere Mommy went she tried to snatch a bible. She always has an excuse 4 wanting a new bible; it’ either easier to read or travel with. I always teased her saying “Mommy don’t U have enough bibles and she would say I can’t get enough of my boyfriend, referring to Jesus”.

As a friend, she was a friend in need, as a sister she was loving, generous and very forgiving. As a wife, I’m not sure, since we didn’t have the opportunity to experience this. As a mother and grandmother she is an amazing pillar of strength and supportive of us all regardless of our failures or successes. She always has a listening ear and a shoulder for every one of us. Mommy is a strong fighter and her belief in Christ is her sustenance through all the storms life dealt her. I always wonder how she managed 2 save so much money. I asked her once how she did it and “she said she did not know but God was keeping His promise to her”.

MOMMY NEVER CLAIMED PERFECTION AND NO ONE IS, BUT SHE’ MY MOMMY, THE ONLY ONE I HAVE AND I LOVE HER SO. SLEEP WELL MY LOVE BUT DON’T 4GET THE CHILDREN GOD MADE YOU GUARDIAN OVER. REST EASY MOMMY, GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY IN YOUR LIFE IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

"No man is greater than his prayer life. The Pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. The pulpit can be a shop window to display one's talents; the prayer closet allows no showing off"-Leonard Ravenhill

It's been eight years Mommy since you left this wicked world. A lot has happenned but your legacy will live on 4ever. You always stood tall and proud and did not care about worldly validations because you were so confident in who you are and whose you are- i.e our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
I love and miss you more than words can tell.

Happy Mothers day,Mommy. How can I ever thank you enough? You were a Mother amongst Mothers... You gave us life and we took it for granted that you'll always be here. All the plans I had for you still nag at me because I know they can't be fulfilled now. Oh how I wish I could get just one more chance to show you how much I love you, to show my gratitude but death is so final and gives no second chances.
