Memorial
May 13, 2012 - Gary Wood, age 62, passed away at the Togus VA Hospice, in Augusta. Gary was an area resident who grew up and attended school in Norway. He enlisted in the Marine Corp at the age of 18 and was awarded the purple heart after being wounded in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Edwards AFB in California, where he refueled planes. The end of his Air Force career was spent in Limestone, Maine.
Gary lived in Eliot, Maine for awhile, where he had a career in interior and exterior house painting and was also employed to work on the Piscataqua River bridge between Maine and New Hampshire.
Gary was good with kids and enjoyed babysitting his younger cousins, nieces and nephews. He loved family gatherings. His most recent passion was working on family genealogy. He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Oxford. Gary’s calling at the church was working at the Family History center.
Gary leaves behind two sisters; Dolores Grondin of Riverview, Florida and Donna Marshall of West Paris; one brother, Ryan Wood of Ventura, California and one nephew, Tim Wood of West Paris, and one niece Dawn Lapham of Somersworth, NH and several great nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his father Francis Wood, mother Hazel Williams and sister Wanda Lapham.
Gary’s family wishes to thank the wonderful hospice staff at the Togus VA in Augusta and all of his friends who visited during his stay there. There is no funeral at his request. A graveside ceremony is planned and an announcement to follow at a later date.
