Classic Cars, Investing
Known to friends and family as “Doc” and “PD”, Erich was an astute and witty mentor and partner to several highly-respected, successful business people who began their careers Tucson. He served as a corporal in the United States Army, a no-nonsense finance professor and fund administrator for the University of Arizona, a partner in several successful Tucson real estate ventures, and a founding shareholder and very dapper board member of Leadfusion, Inc. He advised several start-ups, including internet-based and SmartCalc, and is the father of online personal finance calculators, co-authoring in 1995 helpful interactive tools such as the now-ubiquitous “What Will It Take to Be a Millionaire?” used by millions internationally. He was genuinely concerned over the financial well-being of Americans, and was eager to spur their interest in and understanding of saving.

Erich possessed both empathy for the welfare and education of others as well as extensive knowledge. He told stories to subtly impart lessons or to provide encouragement and renew his listener’s confidence and cheer. He taught his students and partners how to learn and reason; he used the Socratic Method rather than doling out answers. He avidly studied economic trends, the impact of government intervention, and the theory of unknown consequences, and was a successful trader and investor. He also was an incorrigible car nut and restored several classic cars from all eras.

Having battled emphysema with determined positivity, Erich is survived by his loving friend and caregiver Barbara Scott, several grateful friends, and his family: Brother Gilbert K. Bleck (Greendale, WI), Sisters Betty M. Akagi (Madison, WI), Marjorie A. Westphal, (Burlington, VT), Virginia G. Bleck (Georgetown, TX), and Nancy E. Bleck, (Oakland, CA) as well as nieces and cousins. A family grave site ceremony will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh, WI near Erich’s birth town of Beaver Dam, WI on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Bleck was the best teacher I ever had...ever. He took an interest in me that transcended the normal professorial relationship. He sparked the entreprenurial spirit in ways that I still look back on and smile in amazement at the sheer accuracy of his predictions.

He was an amazing man. I shall miss him

I'd like to say a few words about my brother Pete's (Erich) burial service. A big thank you to brother Gilbert for arranging and orchestrating it. It was very moving. Gilbert told of his history, Monica and Nancy read poems, Polly read Psalm 23, some of us said something about him from our experiences with him and Betty played her Celtic harp. Then we held hands in a circle and said the Lord's Prayer. I have many good memories of him and miss him a lot.

I was a student in several of Erich's Finance classes in th 60's and he was remarkable. I am certain he was the reason for my Finance Degree from the U of A in '71. Wish I had known how much we had in common like reading, investing and cars. There will never be another like him.

Erich was my father for 5 years. He taught me manners, and right from wrong. I earned my degree in Finance because I wanted him to be proud of me. He was a good father. I will always love him as my dad.
