Diane Carin Schneeweis continued flying on to God on August 27, 2009 after an aviation accident near her home town of Chico, CA.

Diane flew into the world via Long Beach, CA in 1952. She spent her formative years in Southern California where she met and married her husband of 34 years, Greg Schneeweis. They had two beautiful children Sarah and Jeff. In 1989 the family moved to Chico where they live today.

Diane began flying in 1985, following in the footsteps of her father George “Papo” Shepherd, a trained Navy pilot during the World War II era. Diane became a centerpiece in Chico aviation, holding positions as General Manager at the Chico Airport (FBO) as well as Director of the Chico Air Show. She was a renowned flight instructor, member of the 99’s Women’s Pilot Association, and an activist for children’s charities.

Diane’s devotion to her family was unmatched. She was instrumental in the day to day operations of her daughter’s business, HYPE Dance Studio and any free moment she had she spent with her 3 grandchildren.

Diane inspired people near and far, young and old. Whether training in the airplane or meeting on the ground, she was a friend to all she encountered. Her love for life and passion for aviation were only surpassed by her love for God and her family. Diane was a devoted Christian, able to see God in the eyes of every person she met. Flying, for Diane, provided a calming realization that life’s problems are not as big as they seem—as houses and cars look as small as ants from an airplane, so do our problems when we take a step back and look at our lives. She inspired the people around her to never sweat the small stuff.

Diane is survived by her husband, Greg; daughter, Sarah and husband Brian Blakley, beloved grandsons, Jackson and Lincoln; son, Jeff Schneeweis and wife Kristen, beloved granddaughter, Lydia; father, George Shepherd; brother, Ron Shepherd; sister, Debbie Green; sister, Kathy Blankenship. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lucille Shepherd.

"What a beautiful tribute to a wonderful woman! One of my favorite memories with Diane was one morning I went out to get the morning paper & Diane was walking by. We chatted for a few minutes and she told me how wonderful it was that it took a teenage son to bring her to the Lord and make her a Christian. What a beautiful tribute this is to Diane! You are all so blessed to have each other to hold you up when one of you is feeling weak. I loved Diane since I met her SO many years ago - jazzersize classes together, being a first time Mom together, and trips with Greg to Monterey for rugby tournaments when we lived there. (seems like a hundred years ago).

Her spirit lives on in each of you, and I KNOW she is with God and wants you to live your lives. She will missed so much in our whole Scheeweis family, I can't begin to imagine the loss you feel.

Without Greg and Diane a few years ago when our son got in trouble in Chico, we would have been totally lost, but you opened your home to Steve, Mike and myself and welcomed us during a terrible situation.

It feels like I have known the Schneeweis family for most of my life. Growing up in Long Beach, Diane was like a second mom to me. She will always be the "cool mom" who was so friendly, kind, loving and compassionate to me as a little girl. She truly touched my heart and made a huge difference in my life. I have so many wonderful memories of that time that I could write a novel! She was a wonderful friend to my mom and to my entire family. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to see her last January as it had been many years since we connected. I will cherish all of my childhood memories as they are so much of who I am today!

When I moved to Chico 6 years ago I needed to find a CFII. I was very fortunate to find Diane. I always looked forward to spending some "quality time" in the hot cramped cockpit of my 172. Whither under the hood or just doing a BFR I always learned something new. I'm a better pilot because of her skill, care, and concern. She will be missed.

"That photo is great! As with many pilots/students, seeing Diane sitting next to me in the right seat is probably how I will remember her. So many hours over the years during instrument training and biannual flight reviews; her unique style of flight instruction always kept me on my toes. Just as I would feel comfortable with a particular procedure, as in the real flight environment, she would find a clever way to upset the apple cart.

My heart aches for the loss of a friend. I have the deepest sympathy and condolences for her family, friends and especially, Greg."

"Diane was one of the best Flight Instructors I have ever flown with. Her infectious smile and professionalism would calm the most nervous pilot. She had the incredible talent of clearly making a training point without making you feel like an idiot…….”Do you always land this hard?......Let’s try this.”
On my last Biennial Check Ride, she asked me how old I was, and when I told her the reply was “You do not look that old.” And then the best – “You do not fly like you are that old!”
All of us who were blessed by knowing Diane will greatly miss her, but will give thanks to God for placing her into our lives.

"I have had the great privilege of knowing Diane for the last two years. It doesn’t take long to figure out what a special person she is. Even while juggling all her responsibilities, she would manage to give me her undivided attention. She touched my heart along with everyone she knew. She has left an emptiness in my life that I can only try to fill with the beautiful memories she gave me. She is one of a kind that’s for sure. We had matching headsets but we never got them mixed up. She marked hers, you guessed it, with her lipstick. All the time I spent with her she NEVER said an unkind word to, or about anyone. While teaching she got her point across without ever making me feel stupid or incapable. If I landed off the center line she would say something like “ I feel like I am in England today”. If I put it down a little hard she would say “ this is a nice sturdy plane” If I was off course she would say “ so, where do you want to go today?” Although we are all dealing with an enormous amount of sadness, what a joy to have had such a wonderful person in out life. Greg and family, our hearts go out to you. "

Shasta, a man called in and wanted to know what in the world was going on! Diane replied that it was a all women's air race, and that we were all blonde. "I first met Diane at Northgate Aviation several years ago. I was interviewing her to find my next fight instructor. As I worked on getting my medical certificate for about nine months or so, Diane kept in touch with me through the internet. The time came when I finally started ground school with Diane. One day after class as Diane watched me hunch over and complain about my acheing back. Diane said I should try some Mona Vie juice. I told her I was willing to try it if, she really believed it would work for me, she said she would have her husband Greg give me a call to talk about Mona Vie. Greg called me the following week and after trying the MV juice (and feeling healthier ) I began my new relationship with Diane, it now included my new friend Greg who then introduced me to their children Jeff & Sarah. They welcomed me to their new MV Health Juice Business, and opened up their hearts & their homes.
Diane & I flew many times together she shared her dreams with me. One dream she had was, to one day build their MV business to a level that would allow her to buy her father's twin engine Beech Baron. I have no doubt that given enough time Diane & Greg would have accomplished that, and all of their goals. But this untimely accident has taken Diane from all of who love her & will miss her.

"I only met Diane one time and went for a flight with her. It only took that one time to see what a great hearted person she is. She asked if I was ok and handed me a piece of gum for my stomach. When you meet a person that is truly extraordinary it shows right from the beginning.

"What a blessing Diane has been to me and all the children in the RAD (Recreation and Dreams for Children with Cancer) program over the years. She was truly and angel in human form; always enthusiastically giving of herself. "Diane and I shared many things during those quite times in the studio when there weren't any lessons going on. We spoke of our experiences of raising children, being in a leadership role in the business world, and how to allow the uniqueness of our children to come out,without it flustering our own serenity! She shared her excitement when her students would figure out a skill during their flying practices, and how much we learned from those that we are teaching. I never saw Diane when she wasn't able to find a huge smile inside of herself and her dazzling blue eyes would warm any soul. Her faith was always there, in her eternal salvation and in the wonder of her world."

"Diane first touched our family's lives Christmas 1994. Our son, Michael, 8-years-old at the time took his first flying lesson with Diane. He came home form the airport and said, "Mom take back all that junk to Toys R Us, all I want to do is fly." Michael and Diane shared a passion for flying and in the past 15 years our love and friendship grew. Diane arranged for Michael to fly his prom date to Redding for dinner and he was only a junior. Michael will tell you that he was able to graduate in May, 2009 from the USNA in Annapolis thanks to Diane. We were so honored to have Greg and Diane to share that week with our family and friends. Diane touched the lives of three generations of pilots in our family and her spirit will be always be with us."

"Diane, you are the flight instructor I will never forget - I still remember our flights together when I was a student pilot. You always taught me to "fly the plane" and not get caught up in everything else - and every time I get my head stuck inside the cockpit (to this day) I always think of you telling me to "get your head outside" or "fly the plane". Your lessons stuck - and to this day I can still hear your voice. You where an amazing teacher and a wonderful person - it was an honor to learn from you. Diane, you are the flight instructor I will never forget - I still remember our flights together when I was a student pilot. You always taught me to "fly the plane" and not get caught up in everything else - and every time I get my head stuck inside the cockpit (to this day) I always think of you telling me to "get your head outside" or "fly the plane". Your lessons stuck - and to this day I can still hear your voice. You where an amazing teacher and a wonderful person - it was an honor to learn from you. Thank you for sharing the lessons and the joys of flying - you have changed my life forever!

As the mother of a HYPE Dancer, I was always so happy to see Dianne at the studio. She was always smiling and I always would think to myself "how nice for Sarah to have such a super Mom who is so helpful and willing to help." I know she will be missed terribly and want to send her family my well wishes!!
