We picked this spot because it has a beautiful view of the Waianae mountain range and the ocean. As Kristin said when we first saw the potential spot "Oh, this is just where he would want to be" The view of the mountains is the same as from our balcony. While we took some time to decide if his final resting place should be here in Hawaii or elsewhere, we realized that David had really been happiest here in Hawaii. As he said, "it was a life long dream" to be here and he never wanted "to leave the rock."

G David Rivers
December 5, 1937 - July 13, 2009
G David Rivers went to be with the Lord early Monday morning at 71 years old.

Dave was born in Newton, Mass, and grew up in Belmont, Mass. He was from humble beginnings and grew up in rough neighborhoods. He became a Christian when he was in high school and literally fought his way out of being a leader of his local gang to follow Christ. Dave worked his way through Wheaton College, IL. He graduated with a major in Theology and several minors.

He served in the professional ministry for 12.5 years as Assistant Pastor, Youth Director, Pastoral Counselor, and Director of Christian Education.
He later built a successful career in financial services. The last year of his working life was spent substitute teaching at local middle and high schools in Mililani. He loved sharing stories of the young kids or people he had helped wherever he worked. Many were touched by him.

He loved his ipod and listened by the hour to Il Divo, Whitney Houston, Neil Diamond, and many other favorites. He enjoyed southern comfort, duct tape, the beach, and playing guitar. And puppets ... and dreamed of taking them to brighten children in the hospital! But music, of really any kind, was his overall passion.

He will be partying in heaven, loving the music, and carefully preparing a place for all his family to join him. He was welcomed into Heaven by his mother, Ottolene Belban. He is survived by one uncle, Charlie Rivers, his wife, Kristin Rivers, five children and their spouses, David & Dee Rivers, Mark & Pam Rivers, Sarah & Sean Garratt, Rachel & Jay Boulay, and Devorah Rivers, his 12 grandchildren, David, Joshua, Tamara, Sharaya, Dyana, Misha, Laura, Caitlin, Jessica, Jesse, Ethan, and Hannah and also by his great-grandchildren, Brittany and Emma. They are all a treasure to him and he was very proud of each of them. Being an only child growing up, family was always very important to Dave. He will be deeply missed.

As has been written, Pastor Dave just popped into my head a while ago and I am saddened to heard he's gone - but clearly not forgotten.

He was inspirational and wonderfully funny when I was a teen and I was babysitter for David, Mark, and Sarah. They were too cute! I remember Topwa, too, with her eyes of different colors.

Grace and peace to all.

I only knew Dave for a short time as my youth leader but his influence touched me in a unique way. I'm preparing what will probably be my final puppet show and my thoughts went back to how I got started with this creative ministry. I had just graduated from college and gotten married. We started attending a church in Bensenville and the church was planning on a puppet show for "Rally Day" that Fall. They found out my wife could sew and asked her to help make puppets which she was happy to do. The next thing I knew I was in charge of this puppet show. There was no plan and nobody knew anything about doing a puppet show and all the help disappeared. I did remember Dave Rivers, just before he left FBC doing a puppet show for our youth group. I copied everything I could remember including the furry four and Joe Cool. I wrote a short script and picked out two songs, built a stage like the one I remembered, taught the teens what to do and did the show. It went over so well that we have been asked to do puppet shows ever since. We have touched hundreds of people over the last forty years all because of the creativity of Dave Rivers. I was just thinking back to that first puppet show I saw as a teen and decided to google Dave Rivers and came across this website. It's good to hear how He has influenced so many other people. I'm sure he will be greatly missed. If any of his family is still in the Chicago area I would be honored if you to come to our final performance on Nov.12th and 13th. You can E-mail me for details. I'm hopping Dave will be watching what he started. God Bless.

I don't know why, but Dave's name and face popped into my head in the middle of afternoon work, so I googled him and came to this site. So sorry to hear of his passing three years later, but I want those who love him to know what a pervasive influence his ministry in Elmhurst in the 1960s had on my life. He challenged us to take Christian faith seriously, and I did. For what it's worth, I have been in ordained ministry for 23 years, and am now Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield (IL) in the Episcopal Church. While there were many influences that pointed my young life in the direction it took, his was one of he big ones. Blessings to everyone.

I was there when Mark and Pam found out,and when they told Sharaya,Misha, and Jesse.I know how it feels to lose a grandparent, and i'm glad i was able to be there for them in their time of loss, cause i know how much it helped me to have someone there for me.

God Bless.
