Carl Mitchell Brown was born April 12, 1965 in Greeley, Colorado to Richard and Karen Brown. As a student at Eaton High School, he played football and was selected to be on the All-State football team. He also wrestled and went to state his senior year. He graduated co-valedictorian from Eaton High School in 1983. He received the prestigious Boettcher Scholarship and attended the Colorado School of Mines. He graduated in 1987 with a B.S. in Geological Engineering with high scholastic honors and was honored as Outstanding Senior Geological Engineer.

During college he helped start the chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ on his campus. He spent his summers traveling to the former Soviet Union to do evangelism. After college, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Romania, 1987-1989. While there, he worked to start a covert campus ministry.

The summer before leaving for Romania he met Angela Reinan. On July 28, 1989 Carl and Angela were married in Eaton, Colorado. Together they moved to Deerfield, Illinois where Carl attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He graduated in 1992 with an M.A. in Religion. While Carl attended seminary he worked as an engineer (1989-1994) for Harza Engineering Company in Chicago. He always considered his time as an engineer good preparation for a long-term career in missions.

In 1990, they welcomed their first daughter, Rebekah Jane (Janey) into their home. In 1992, Kara Leah was born. She was followed by Katherine Jo Anna in 1994 and Isabel Mable Agape in 2002.

Carl served as a church planter/theological educator with the Evangelical Free Church of America from 1995 until the present. Carl and his family lived in Kazan, Russia from 1995-2001. During a stint back in the U.S. Carl pursued a Ph.D. in Inter-Cultural Studies at Tinity International University graduating in 2007. From 2005-2008 Carl lived in Kazakhstan where he served in church planting, evangelism and theological education and also was currently, the dean of Central Asian Theological Seminary in Almaty, Kazakhstan. At his death Carl and his family were living in Kandern, Germany.

Hi Angela - I met Carl via phone about 15 years ago while he was in Kazan through Svetlana Shagina, who I also did not know very well at that time, though I know her pretty good now!

She set a phone meeting for Carl and I and she was very nice. Carl mentioned that "whoever got Svetlana" would be a very luck guy!!

Well, I ended up being the lucky guy! We married about a year and a half after I talked to him. IF you would like to hear the whole story, I'd like to share it with you.

I am hoping your life now is full of joy and blessed by our Lord, despite Carl's passing.

God bless you and your family.

I was saddened to hear of Carl's passing, and I extend to you, Angela, and to his family my deepest condolances. Carl was an old friend, whom I met in Colorado Springs at an FCA gathering. He was warm, kind and such an encourager. He made his mark on my life in a profound way. So profound that through the past years, I have thought of him, his work, and how good a friend he was to me when I was going through struggles. I remember the excitement he had when he told me of his approaching marriage to you. I was so very happy that he had found someone who shared his vision and who completed him. We lost touch, I went back to college and then married a wonderful man. But as I said, throughout the years I thought of him and prayed for him and you. In January of 2009, I was putting away some momentos of my parents that had been left to me and I re-discovered Carl's postcards and the Christmas card he had sent me. Many of them came from that first year he spent in Russia. It was a priviledge have known him. A Christian in every sense of the word, a good friend-a real "balcony person". He will always be missed by those whose lives he touched...

I am shocked and I am in disbelief... This is just not right. Carl was such a huge influence on my christian walk back in Tatarstan. I can't say enough what his friendship meant to me back then.

Angela, I grieve with you.

Angi & girls - We were thunderstruck when we heard the news of Carl's entrance into his home with Christ! We have prayed for you so often since that day.

Terry was reminiscing about being in Kazan and Carl telling the story of the mechanic who couldn't quite tell if he was from Russia or Europe! He was astounded that Carl was from the U.S!! Such was his incredible linguistic skill! How we enjoyed having him at our home when he brought Volodya to Iowa and Nebraska! You both impacted our EFC Atlantic,Iowa church so much - giving us a vision for missions and the opportunity we all have to participate in short term missions. We were so glad to be able to send 5 'unlikely' missionaries to help build the training center in Kazan - they were all greatly impacted by this experience. We now carry that vision on to St. Louis as we work to build a heart for missions here at Cornerstone EFC.

Carl's distinctive 'laid-back' manner of speaking and his wonderful sense of humor endeared him to everyone who met him!! Our hearts are breaking for the difficult transition time you must be enduring right now. Please, know that we intercede before the Throne of our merciful Father on your behalf! May He give you a grace and peace that surpasses understanding! - Terry & Karol Schoenfeld

On April 6 Flori Dragu left the following comment in Romanian. I have provided an English translation of her kind words. Carl served in Romania from 1987-89 with CCC on a Stint. I have added the names in parentheses. She knew us during that time with our code names which we all used since this was still the time of Communism. Carl went by the name Nelu which means John. I have kept the original Romanian in the comment in case you’d like to see it. Carl could have read and understood her words for himself.

“I turn time back to 21 years ago and I remember again a wonderfully beautiful part of my life… that time when I met God. Then it was that you, Carl, along with Eugen (Monte Race) and Edi (Dudley Brown) were in Romania and through you all I came to know what it means to be a Christian. Thank you. And may God rest your soul! We will always remember you dearly!”
