Cipriano “Opring” Claridad, surrounded by those he loved, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, at 11:55 AM at Seton Medical Hospital.

Cipriano “Opring” Claridad, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and great-grandfather was born on September 26, 1932 in Santa Maria, Pangasinan, Philippines to Benigno Claridad Sr. and Felisa Nasog Claridad. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Cipriano graduated at Santa Maria Academy High School. In the 1950’s, he became a hardworking farmer.

Cipriano married Jovita “Betang” Alejo in November 7, 1952. They had five loving daughters, Catherine “Julie,” Josephine “Josie,” Phoebe, Tita, and Mirasol “May.”

In the midst of the 1950’s, Cipriano worked at Bagiuo City Hall as an assistant to his uncle, Attorney Dionesio Claridad. In the 1960’s Cipriano became part of the Liberal Party Movement. During his prime in Santa Maria, he was the undisputed barangay captain of Poblacion East for 8 consecutive years in the early 70’s. He immigrated to Northern California in 1979, and his family followed him within the next few years.

Cipriano resided in South San Francisco and moved to Daly City in 1986. He worked at Saint Francis Convalescent Pavilion, a nursing home as a Dietary Aide. In 1997, Cipriano retired at the age of 65. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, cooking, watching sports, and taking photographs of his family.

Cipriano lived his life beside his loving wife, Jovita, his 5 daughters & son-in-laws, his 13 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren, whom all called him “Tatay.”

Tatay, may you rest in peace and comfort. We miss and love you forever and always.

The viewing will be held Thursday and Friday, October 29 and 30 at Duggans Mortuary, from 4pm – 9pm. A Memorial Service in honor of Cipriano’s life will be held on Saturday, October 31 at St. Agustin Church at 10:30am, followed by the funeral at Cypress Lawn Cemetery.

"The last time i met uncle was the memorial of Lola Feliza and that was about 13years ago,he told us that he'll be back again for a vacation....but.... that was the last time i saw him...what i missed about uncle is his sense of humor....he's a funny man.He loves fishing ...

"Both Manong Opring and his wife Manang Bitang (who hails from Asingan -- Alejo family) are my distant relatives. In Ilocano, kunada man a doble-doble a panagkakabagian. Our family roots can be traced back from the original Ginez clan -- one of the pioneer inhabitants of Santa Maria during the 300+ years of Spanish colonization in our native Philippines. Most of them are the so called adventurous but hard-working Ilocanos from Narvacan and other neighboring towns in Ilocos Sur. My paternal great-grandma is Paula Ginez. Manong Opring and I are "one generation gap" but I was told to address him "manong". Sursurutenmi kano ti tukad iti panagkakabagian, according to my father. In fact, his two daughters (my nieces), Julie and Josie are even older than me....... I know him to be a disciplinarian and a tough local politician in his heydays as a barangay captain during the pre-Martial Law era. He's gifted with a baritone voice which captures his audience' attention when delivering his privileged "discurso" at usual gatherings within the confines of Poblacion East -- no tiempo ti kompania, pasalaan, kasaran wenno natayan ......... When his eldest daughter got married to a very promising US military serviceman (originally from San Vicente, Santa Maria) at a very young age (without even completing her college course), naglaok nga unget ken leddaang iti immapon ti kaungganna ta damo a mapadasanna a maiyadayo ti maysa nga anak ti sidongna. I knew him to be an overprotective "padre-de-familia" to his five lovely daughters. Marigatan a makaasideg dagiti agarem ti arubayanda ....... Ket dagita gayam nga unget ken leddaang na idi ket nasukatan met ti seguridad ken natalged a masakbayan para ti familiana ta daytoy nga anakna iti puon ken gapu no apay a nakadanon ditoy tanap ti America agraman ti intero a familiana. "Tatay thank you for everything! We miss you so much Tay. Thank you for helping me out through the thick and thin and for disciplining me as a child. I'm so sorry that I used to drive you nuts Tay. I can still remember those days when I would do the most ridiculous things and you would chase me around with a slipper saying "Ookininasnan Obiing." You must of been exhausted, but don't worry Tay I've changed and matured. I promise to keep doing a good job in school and to follow Manong Russell and Raphy's footsteps into achieving higher education in school. You inspired me to do lots of things I would never think of doing today. I also hold back tears when I want to break down because I remember you saying,"Don't cry because if you do, I'll cry too," and you would make this face )': That always cheered me up. "Tay...there's not enough words in the world to express much I love and miss you. As I sit here thinking of all the cherishable memories we shared, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for raising me into what I am today. I made it into the toughest program in the United States Navy and third hardest school in America due to your much respected guidance. It was hard Tay, finding out what had happened. It felt like a huge chunk of my heart was broken off, but it relieves me to know that you're in a better place now watching over all of us. I can talk to you and lola every night, knowing you're here to help. You were always there when any of us needed you. Tatay, I'm doing well in school and I will be ranking up in December as Petty Officer Third Class. I know you'll be watching my graduation and I know I made you proud. "I have never spent quality time with you uncle. I can still recall those times that we'd drive home to the province and stay there for a little bit. But I never got to talk or to interact with you that much. And now that you've already passed away I guess my long time dream would never be fulfilled, to hang out with my favorite uncle. Though we may never have known each other that much, I believe that you'll forever look over me and my entire family. "Tay, thank you for everything that you've done for my family such as taking care of me as a baby when my parents were at work and while you watched me and all my manongs and manangs .It feels like yesterday was yours and nanays 50th anniversary .I remember as a kid till now i remember being hard headed about eating when you tell me to eat haha.I remember those long drives from the bay area to las vegas and my dads slow driving. But when i found out the news I couldn't believe it. It was hard for me at the funeral to see you getting buried. My face was drowning with tears as your casket gets lowered into the ground. I know your looking down on all of us checking if were good, healthy and were eating haha.Thanks for everything from not only me but from the Cabardo family. "Insan Opring was one of our close relatives who convinced our late Dad to throw his hat in the political arena. And in our Pa's unsuccessful attempts to wrest political control in our town, Insan Opring and younger brod, the late Insan Nador, were always at his side. I vividly remember the last time Insan Opring tried to convice our Pa to again seek the mayoralty of our town was in the local elections of 1969. But our Pa, who was then the Assistant Provincial Warden did not accede to his and other relatives' persistent prodding reasoning out that the late Mayor Eusebio Macaraeg, being his 'compadre' pleaded with him to give way as he (Ex-Mayor Macaraeg) just wanted to be elected for one term and not just Mayor-successor to the late Mayor Arturo Cachila, Sr., who died during hi incumbency as mayor of Santa Maria. And so, Insan Opring and Co. convinced and fielded instead, Dr. Prospero Cabanayan, also a relative, as the Liberal Party's bet for Mayor, and the rest is history. Politics is deeply ingrained in him that in his first vacation sometime in 1983 when I was still a Barangay Captain- a position he also held, he actively paricipated in our discussions at home with political leaders at the time. Even on our past two visits to the mainland, still Insan Opring kept on asking me about the latest politcal developments in our town.

In his passing, Insan Opring orphaned not only his immediate family but also us- his relatives and friends who value his kinship, camaraderie, sense of humour and other virtues that will surely keep his memory alive.

LET US ALL JOIN HIS FAMILY IN THEIR PRAYERS FOR THE ETERNAL REPOSE OF HIS SOUL."
