Bruce W. Curtis, better known (or affectionately known) as "BC," passed away peacefully at his home in Napili, on his birthday (July 4th) under the loving care of hospice and his "All Care Hawaii" caregivers.

" BC" was born in upstate N.Y. in the small farming community of Marion. He is pre-deceased by his older brother, "Chuck," who was a funeral director for 25 years in the town of Fairport, N.Y. Bruce was in the hospitality business for many years, working at the Hilton, in NYC, the 4 Flags in Texas, the Flagship Rochester, in N.Y., and functioning as the GM at the southern rim of the Grand Canyon and later at Silverado Country Club in Napa, CA.

He came to Maui in 1981 to open the 100th Marriott Resort for the Marriott Corporation, serving as General Manager. He remained there until he retired in 1997. his love of people was extraordinary and he made many life long friends. "BC" loved Hawaii because of the Aloha spirit here and he gave back to the community in a multitude of ways. His love and passion for sailing took him to Midway Island as well as to Tahiti after his retirement. His craving for new adventure and creative ways of dealing with situations and people, never faded. He leaves behind a huge, empty space.
He is survived by his wife, Anne, 2 nieces, Nancy (Kerry) VanIseghem and Judy (Jan) Odhner , 2 cousins, and hundreds of friends.

Services and Life Celebration for Bruce Curtis will be held Saturday, July 26th at 5p, Flemming Beach, West Maui. For more information email

Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of support for Anne, BC's nieces and of course the blessings everyone shared at the memorial last weekend. Let this site be a place where we can continue to share the ways in which BC inspired us all.

A video tribute will be posted to the site as well as on YouTube and the Maui Marriott Employees page.

I was a very young manager at the Marriott when BC took time to mentor and develop me. He was a very generous and kind man.

I'm returning to Hawaii for retirement and was trying to find BC. To my great disappointment I found that BC has has passed through this thoughtful memorial. Anne, Gold Bless and my prayers are with you. We loved BC and he will always have a special place in my heart along with all the Maui Marriott associates. He was a mentor , a friend, a supporter and was always there for anyone who needed advice or coaching. He was a class act and a great leader and role model for me. I always try to live up to his example of pure kindness. Today my heart is very heavy. Georja, , thank-you for your kindness in doing this as otherwise I would have never known.
