Alan Landers

November 30, 1940

February 27, 2009

Alan Landers was an American male model and actor, best known as the "Winston Man", who appeared in advertising for Winston cigarettes.

After a stint in the Army, Landers took acting classes in New York and worked as a model. He appeared in numerous fashion magazines, and was featured in a Playgirl centerfold.

Landers took up smoking "before his bar mitzvah", smoking two-and-a-half packs a day for extended periods, and in 1987, was diagnosed with lung cancer and later emphysema and cancer of the larynx, which he attributed to a lifetime of heavy smoking. He died from cancer of the larynx on February 27, 2009, after surviving his previous bouts with lung cancer as well as heart disease.

In later life, he became an anti-smoking advocate, attributing his health problems to his smoking, and was involved in a court case against the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company that remained ongoing at the time of his death. He has done a lot for the anti-smoking campaign, and will be greatly missed.

Although we only spoke briefly during a phone conversation last year we both had a common bond, lung cancer. He personally contacted me after reading an email post I made to him supporting his battle against the tobacco companies and message against tobacco use. I am a 28 year smoking induced lung cancer survivor.

He will be missed but his message against tobacco use will continue on.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Although I didn't know Alan personally, I am so sorry to hear about his passing - I hope his family can take solace in the knowledge that he did not live or die in vain, and his fight will continue. Alan, please watch over my wife and give her strength; this is her second day of quitting smoking, and she needs all the support and love she can get. She's a beautiful, wonderful, vibrant, caring, loving, amazing person, and this is the toughest thing she's ever done. I need her to be with me for many more years to come. May you rest peacefully, knowing how many lives you're still changing for the better.

My name is David Goerlitz and i am the "other" Winston Man. I did the ads in the 80's and after I quit smoking and turned my back on R.J.Reynolds, I began in 1988 my 20 year fight to get kids to never start. Alan contacted me from Florida and he began doing the same thing.
Our approaches were diffrent in that he was obviously quite angry at RJR because of his lung cancer diagnosis (understandably) and mine was to expose their ridiculous tactics using healthy macho and rugged images. Our passions were the same in that the end result was "do whatever we needed to get kids to never start using the crap".

Alan will be greatly missed and may he rest in peace. I sure wish he was able to see his day in court. That would have been one hell of a fight. David Goerlitz (formerwinstonman)

Thru all of your powerful presentation, you will live on through others as the voice in their heads and hearts of the horrible effects of tobacco products. You have touched so many lives in so many ways, your memory will live on.
May you rest in peace.
